Everybody wants to know if they can travel in Spain. The changing measures applied by the local and national government in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country are sometimes confusing.

The declaration of the recent State of Alarm has granted the autonomous communities to dictate measures to limit freedoms. Freedoms as free movement, according to the evolution of the pandemic in each territory. It is understood that they cannot apply the same measures to the entire country, as they may be different levels of severity at the different communities.

However, there are also general rules that, regardless of the autonomous community where we are, we must comply while the State of Alarm lasts. We must respect the curfew, commercial premises must have less than 50% of their capacity, we must maintain the safety distance, etcetera.

Can I travel from my community to other communities of Spain?

The autonomous communities are making the decision to close their entrances depending on the incidence of the virus in their territory. There are also specific measures such as those that the Community of Madrid has taken during the long weekends, when they decided to close their borders to avoid the spread of the virus caused by the possible trips of the residents.

Likewise, other communities have made decisions regarding partial confinements, such as Catalonia. Others are about to modify the measures they already have, as is the case of Andalusia.

Leaving Spain, is it possible?

Yes, there are no exit restrictions from Spain. Where the traveler can get limitations is in the country of destination. Within the Schengen area you can travel while complying with the particular regulations of each state. Regulations such as having the negative results of a test of COVID, or even carry out a preventive quarantine upon arrival in the new country.

In many cases, countries outside the European Union maintain restrictions for Europeans that are aggravated by the increase in incidences of the virus in our territory.

And can I travel to Spain?

This question is very common and the answer again will be “it depends”. Spain has legally the restriction of entry to the Iberian territory since the beginning of the first State of Alarm, in March of this year. However, it has gradually opened the borders with certain countries.

This restriction is renewed monthly and includes or removes countries from the list, which only applies to what is considered non-essential trips, which are mainly tourism or any other that may be delayed.

However, these limitations end for those who are Spanish citizens or foreigners residing in Spain. Although they were abroad, they can always return as long as they fill in the template that the Ministry of Health is currently requesting. Also, if requested, they must comply with the quarantine or allow to evaluate their health situation when entering the territory.
