When travelling to any country, it is important to check beforehand which products are allowed to pass through customs. In Spain, as in any other country, there are permitted products, controlled products and prohibited products. This week we bring you a new post about customs in Spain so that you don’t have any surprises when you make your move.

It is important to note that the conditions will not be the same for EU citizens as for non-EU citizens.

Currency

When travelling to Spain, the maximum amount of money you will be allowed to take through customs is 10000 euros. If the amount of money you have on you is less than this, you will be able to travel without any problem and without the need for additional formalities.

However, if the amount of money you are carrying is more than 10000 euros, you will have to declare this money at the airport.

To declare this money, you must fill in the S1 form. Filing this form is completely free of charge and does not require any other documentation. The most important thing you should know about it is that you should always present it prior to movement, and you should carry it with you along with your cash. If required by law enforcement agencies, you will be obliged to present both (cash and form).

Other controlled goods

As money, there are certain products that are also subject to limits when it comes to bringing them into Spain:

  • Tobacco: persons over the age of 18 may carry a maximum of 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of rolling tobacco.
  • Alcohol: you can transport a maximum of 1 litre of alcoholic beverage with an alcohol content of more than 22º. If the alcohol content is lower than 22º, 2 litres of alcoholic beverages may be brought in.
  • Animal, food and plant products: Travellers coming from another EU country may carry meat and dairy products, provided they are for personal consumption. This also applies to plants and vegetables, as long as they have been grown in an EU country and are free of diseases and pests. However, if you are travelling to Spain from a non-EU country, you will not be able to bring in meat or dairy products. With regard to plants and vegetables, you can bring them into Spain within certain limits.
  • Medicines: you cannot carry a quantity of medicines that corresponds to more than 3 months of medical treatment. In addition, you must carry with you the medical prescription for these medicines. However, there are some exceptions for medicines that are not controlled, such as aspirin.
  • Pets: dogs, cats and ferrets under 3 months of age are not allowed to enter Spain. Pets over this age must travel with a vaccination and veterinary health certificate. In addition, Spain requires the installation of a microchip in these animals. Birds must be vaccinated against avian influenza and comply with isolation and quarantine protocols before and after the trip. Reptiles must also undergo certain clinical tests in order to travel to Spain, such as the Salmonella test. It is important to know that any animal travelling from an EU country must have a European passport.
  • Works of art, jewellery, precious stones, antiques…

Prohibited products

  • Narcotics and drugs.
  • Certain types of foodstuffs.
  • Biological materials, such as human or animal tissue.
  • Publications with obscene or dangerous content, such as pornography.
  • “Pirated” versions of records, books, etc.
  • Wild animals.
