The DNI NIE TIE and Certificate of registration of citizens of the European Union are the identification documents that people who live or have interests in Spain must have and they will depend on the origin of each individual.

But which one do I need? The DNI, NIE, TIE?

In this sense, we will start with the Spanish, who have the initial ID for the National Identification Document, which has the identification data of the person, such as:

Front

  • Name
  • ID number,
  • Date of birth
  • Sex
  • Nationality

Back

  • Home
  • Name of your parents
  • Place of birth

And what about a foreigner? NIE, TIE, Certificate?

In the case of foreigners, it is necessary to explain that it is the NIE and it is nothing more than the abbreviation of “Foreigner Identification Number” and is the number assigned by the immigration office and by which any non-Spanish person will be identified.

Now, to obtain a NIE you may or may not be a Spanish resident since this number is not only used to live loyally in Spain but also to invest in the country, open bank accounts and is often assigned from the consulate or embassy of Spain in the country of origin of the person or persons requesting it.

Based on this and once we have our NIE obtained in the country of origin or in Spain itself and we want to live in the Iberian Peninsula, we must obtain our physical card where our NIE is reflected and other identifying data of, such as full name, date of birth, nationality among others.

However, not all NIE cards have the same format and this will depend on the country of origin of the holder, understanding that nationals of non-European countries have one card model while citizens of European countries have another.

The TIE

And this is how we arrived at the TIE, being this the abbreviation of “Foreigner identification card” which is exclusive for foreigners not belonging to the European Union, British citizens recently joining this group and that in addition to the natural identification data it has in its content:

Front:

  • Immigration status (residence for work, student visa, community family member, etc)
  • Date of validity of the residence permit
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Foreigner identification number

Back

  • Place of birth
  • Address of the person’s home
  • Place and date of issue

Regarding the Certificate of registration of citizens of the European Union, as its name says, it is the document by which nationals from the Schengen area register in Spain, in its content we can find:

Front

  • Name
  • The date and place of birth
  • Nationality
  • Foreigner identification number
  • Home address
  • Date since you are resident in the Spanish territory
