covid19

The Covid-19 vaccination campaign is progressively advancing in the United States and in most European countries. Spain is one of these countries. As of today in Spain, 9.3% of the population has already completed the vaccination process. Moreover, 24.28% of the population has received the first dose of the vaccine.

If you are an expat resident in Spain, in this post we tell you about the vaccination process against Covid-19. What rights do expats have and under what conditions? Can they be vaccinated in Spain? Read on to find out all your doubts.

Right to vaccination

As announced by the Spanish Ministry of Health, the Vaccination Strategy is a public health strategy. What does this mean? It means that all persons residing in Spain, regardless of their nationality and type of insurance, must be vaccinated against Covid-19. However, the prioritisation established by the authorities will always be followed, following criteria of risk, exposure, age and so on.

The Spanish government claims that it is currently vaccinating all persons residing in Spanish territory, following the above-mentioned prioritisation criteria, without including nationality conditions.

How is this being put into practice?

First, it is important to know that autonomous communities manage their own vaccination programmes. Even so, regardless of the autonomous community in which you live, if you have your resident card in Spain or TIE and are registered with the health service of the community, you will receive a call to get the vaccine when it is your turn to be vaccinated. Remember that this “turn” will depend on the group to which you belong.

However, the situation is different for expats living in Spain who have private health insurance. In this case, although the Ministry of Health has assured that all residents in Spain can be vaccinated, it will be more complicated for health personnel to locate you.

What happens if I have private health insurance?

There is currently no intention in Spain to include the private health system in the vaccination process. However, if the Spanish Ministry of Health keeps its word, the vaccine will be offered to everyone living in Spain. This means that it is up to the Spanish authorities to determine how, when and in what order the vaccination process will be implemented. But, sooner or later, you will receive the call to get the Covid-19 vaccine in the same way as those registered in the public health system.

Now you know that you can indeed receive the Covid-19 vaccine in Spain. We hope we have been of help to you in resolving any doubts you may have. Remember that everyone’s effort will help us to beat the virus sooner.
