You want to move and you need to start organizing your documents to live in Spain but you do not know where to start, you have been told or have read that you must get your NIE, the register, social security number, the account, the card health, the mobile line, but what do I do first? Don’t worry, we are here to help you.

The most important thing that you must manage once you step on Spanish soil is your TIE or Certificate of registration of citizen of the European Union if you are not a Spanish citizen , if you are, you must manage your ID but for this you must have some prerequisites that we will explain later.

In order to manage your resident card, it is necessary to make an appointment with the National Police, which is the body in charge of requesting TIE’s and issuing ID, and it is to them that the documentation required in each case must be delivered. In the case of Spaniards who only have a passport, they should not make an appointment, they should go directly to the nearest police station and indicate their situation so that their ID can be issued.

What do I need to get my ID?

Among the most important documents for the purposes of managing your identification in Spain regardless of your nationality will be the padrón,. In the case of Spaniards, specifically they will require their literal birth with the mention that says “for DNI” and their passport. Foreigners must carry their passport and the document where they are granted residence or stay (visa or resolution).

What about social security?

The social security number can only be requested if you are Spanish or if the residence for which the foreigner is in Spain allows to work. For Europeans it can be requested only with a passport, but it must be updated to NIE once it is obtained this number, so that the quotes we make are linked to our name and not to the passport number (which we know can change).

To obtain your number, you must go to any of the social security offices with your residence card or DNI, a job offer or signed work contract. In the case of students, with the internship agreement signed by the university or institute higher education and by the collaborating entity.

You will be given a document with your personal data and the social security number that has been assigned to you which will accompany you for the rest of your life. This number must be provided to your employer in case of being an employee, or use it to contribute as individually as a self-employed worker

And now that you are contributing to social security, you can request your health card, which is nothing more than your identification at the health center closest to your home. This process is very simple as long as you already have the previous documents.

How can I call people?

Well, here is the last of what is required to live in Spain, or perhaps the most important thing, but we recommend managing it once you have a NIE and a bank account. It is the internet and the mobile number. Although it can be acquired from the beginning, it is limited to us then the options of companies that provide this service.

This is how there are companies such as Orange, Movistar and Vodafone, which allow us to acquire mobile lines with a passport and also allow us to contract internet and television. However, there are other more accessible companies that require having a NIE to be able to contract them, so we recommend, if possible, wait until this point to carry out this procedure.

In the same way, if upon arrival you acquired a mobile number and you do not want to lose it, when making your contract you can carry your number to the new company or add it to the plan of your choice with the same company.

You are ready to live in Spain, so can we help you do it? You can always count on us for your procedures. Remember to follow us on our social networks to stay updated on all our blog posts:
