What are consulates?

Consulates are the direct representation of a country’s public administration abroad. They are linked to the Foreign Ministry of the country in question in all its functions. In addition, the consulate must look after the interests of the State and the safety of its nationals.

Most countries have a consulate in every country in the world.

What are the tasks of the consulates?

Consulates have different types of functions in the foreign countries in which they are located. Among them, we find:

  • Civil Registration: consulates perform the function of Civil Registration abroad. In other words, if you live in a foreign country and you need to register a birth, marriage, death or guardianship, you must go to the consulate of your country of origin in that country. They also take care of all the formalities related to nationality documents.
  • Notary’s office: the consulate of your home country abroad will help you with the processing of powers of attorney, wills, notarisation of documents, etc.
  • Documentation functions: this is one of the most common functions of consulates and the one for which they are most in demand. Consulates are responsible for issuing passports, laissez-passers, life certificates, residence certificates, etc. They are also responsible for their legalisation.
  • Assistance and help for detainees: if you have been detained abroad, the consulate of your country will provide you with support and assistance. The consulates can provide financial assistance (reimbursable), notify the detainee’s family, visit the detainee in prison, deliver correspondence, etc. They can also assist you with your transfer if you wish to serve your sentence in your country of origin.
  • Electoral college: if elections are held in your country of origin while you are living abroad, you will have to go to the consulate to have your vote processed.
  • Aliens and visas.
  • Information point: whenever you need information about the country, you can find it at the consulate of your country of origin. They will provide information on medical, educational, legal and other services.
