Dogs are considered man’s best friends. Everyone who has had or has a dog (or two or three) cannot imagine his/her life without them.

In our post of the week we will explain you everything you need to have a dog in Spain. How to make the life of this family member comfortable without incurring in any legal fault?

What do I need to move to Spain with my dog?

In Spain and in general in all the European Union, there is a very strict legislation on the possession of animals. There are even specific regulations for certain breeds of dogs considered dangerous.

If your dog is not a native European, you must meet a series of requirements in order to be able to enter the Schengen area. You should have all the blood tests that indicate that your pet does not have any disease that can be transmitted to other animals or humans, such as rabies.

But my dog is coming from Europe

On the other hand, whether your dog comes from abroad or is already in Europe, it is necessary for it to have an approved microchip in order to be able to identify it in any situation, since the chip will be scanned and all the information about your pet will be known.

It is also necessary that your dog has its own medical history or health card, which indicates its conditions, as well as its own passport, which like people will be required to travel outside the country.

Likewise, our pets must be registered at the City Hall with their own municipal padrón where the animal’s home is declared, as well as with the people who shares the home (the humans there).

Dogs considered dangerous

The dogs considered dangerous (Pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, among others) have a legislation and additional requirements to comply with due to their nature and the risk. Among the most relevant requirements we can name:

– The use of a muzzle when it is not within your residence

– Liability insurance for at least 120,000 euros of coverage

On the other hand, the owners of pets of these breeds must have an administrative license for their possession, be of legal age, not have convictions for crimes and no judicial prohibition of having this type of animal in possession.

It is necessary to emphasize that, no matter the nature of our pet, any damage it may cause to third parties will be on our account. It is always advisable to obtain civil liability insurance for the animals in our house.

Similarly, it is advisable to review the conditions of our home, especially if it is an apartment.
