Have you already arrived in your destination city and are about to start a new life? Do you know what means of transport are available in your city and what mobility possibilities they offer? If you are still a bit lost and don’t know how to get around your city, read on. In this post we will explain how public transport works in Spain. Specifically in the country’s two largest cities: Madrid and Barcelona.

Public transport in Madrid

Although in Madrid it is easy to get around the city centre on foot, you may also need to travel further afield. For this, the Community of Madrid has metro services, buses, suburban trains and even bicycles.

Metro

The Madrid metro is made up of 12 lines distributed throughout the city. These 12 lines stop at more than 300 stations and are open from 6 AM to 1:30 AM. It is the most common way of transport for the people of Madrid and is usually quite busy.

Bus

Madrid’s buses operate both within the city and in other municipalities of the community. You can distinguish these buses by their colour. The blue buses are the city buses, which run inside the city. On the other hand, there are the green buses, known as intercity buses, which go to other municipalities. These buses usually leave from the main stations within the city of Madrid:

  • Príncipe Pío Station
  • Plaza Elíptica Station
  • Moncloa Station
  • Avenida de América Station

Suburban train

The suburban train in Madrid is distributed in 10 different lines that reach the outskirts of the city. If you have to travel to a suburban municipality, it is advisable to use this service, as it is usually faster than the metro.

Bicycles

BiciMAD is Madrid’s public bicycle service. There are a total of 264 BiciMAD stations throughout the city. The service is paid for on an annual basis and allows use of the bicycles for a limited time.

Public transport in Barcelona

Barcelona is also one of the best-connected cities in Spain and has several public transport services.

Metro

The city of Barcelona has 11 metro lines (adding the Barcelona metro lines and those of the railways managed by the Generalitat de Catalunya). The Barcelona metro runs from Monday to Thursday from 5 AM to 12PM. On Fridays and the eve of public holidays it runs from 5 AM to 2 AM, and at weekends it runs uninterruptedly from 5 AM on Saturday to 12 PM on Sunday.

Bus

Barcelona has more than 80 bus lines that cover the urban area of the city. In addition, they also reach other municipalities in the province.

Suburban train

Barcelona’s suburban train is known as Rodalies and is very useful for getting to towns outside the city.

Tramway

The Barcelona tram complements the metro and is an ecological, fast and comfortable means of transport. There are two lines, the Trambaix (T1, T2, T3) and the Trambesòs (T4, T5, T6). With this means of transport you can get to towns such as Cornellà or Badalona.

Bicycles

BICING is Barcelona’s public bicycle service. There are two types of fares, both of which are paid annually.
