Just as thousands of people come to Spain every year to study or work, Spaniards also leave the country in search of new opportunities. If this is your case, you may be deciding which country you are going to move to. In today’s post, we want to talk to you about the Green Card. It is a great option to be able to live and work permanently in the United States, a country full of opportunities. Here we go!

What is the Green Card?

The Green Card, officially known as the Permanent Resident Card, is an official document that allows foreigners to live and work permanently in the United States.

Who can apply for it?

In order to apply for this card, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be an immediate family member of a US citizen
  • You must have invested 1 million euros in the United States or be a first, second or third class immigrant worker.
  • Be a special immigrant (religious worker, special immigrant youth, national of Afghanistan or Iraq, representative of the international media or employee of an international organisation)
  • Have refugee or isolated status
  • Have been a victim of human trafficking or abuse.

What is the process for applying for a Green Card?

In most cases, the first step in applying for a Green Card is to fill out two types of forms: the immigrant petition and the application for a Permanent Resident Card. In some cases, another person will also have to file the application on behalf of the applicant. This person who also files the application is known as the sponsor.

Some of the most common forms to fill out are the following:

The second step in applying for a Green Card is to know whether you will be inside or outside the United States at the time of application. If you will be in the United States, you will need to make an adjustment of Status. If you are outside the country, you will need to complete consular processing with the U.S. Department of State.

Once these steps have been completed, and after an appointment for biometric data collection and a personal interview, you will be able to receive a Green Card if the US Immigration Service considers it appropriate.

We hope you have found this information useful and that it will encourage you to take the step of moving. Remember that we are available to help you with everything you need during your relocation process.
