tarjeta sip

If you have needed to use Spanish healthcare services, you have probably heard of the SIP card. The SIP card is a personal and non-transferable document that allows access to the Spanish healthcare system. But who can obtain this card, and what if you have recently arrived in Spain and you don’t know how to get yours? What rights does the SIP card grant us? In today’s post we tell you everything you need to know about the SIP card and how to use it.

What rights does the SIP card give us?

It is a personal and non-transferable document that gives us the right to benefit from the Spanish healthcare system. This document will be your identification and accreditation document for the health services and benefits that you are entitled to in Spain. These recognized benefits will depend on the insurance regulations in force at any given time.

How to apply for the SIP card?

In order to apply for your SIP card, you will need to present a series of documents

  • Valid passport
  • Residence certificate
  • Padrón
  • Translated birth certificate (sworn and apostilled translation)
  • Form S1 correctly filled in
  • Pension certificate

Remember that in People Global Relocation we help you to obtain all the necessary documentation so that you only have to worry about enjoying your stay in Spain.

You will be able to present these documents and apply for your SIP card in person at your assigned health center. But, thanks to technology, you will also be able to carry out this procedure telematically. In order to do so, you will need to have an electronic ID card or digital certificate. In addition, another interesting fact is that, in the telematic application, you will be able to directly authorize the health authorities to consult certain data about you, thus avoiding having to present the corresponding documentation.

To carry out this procedure telematically, each Spanish autonomous community has its own web page and its own method. For example, if you wish to apply for your SIP card of the Community of Madrid, you will have to enter the Tramitación Digital platform.

How long is this card valid for?

In the case of Spanish citizens, the SIP card is valid indefinitely. This means that they can use it for the rest of their life. However, they must keep it in good condition and avoid breaking or scratching it in order to avoid validation problems.

In the case of foreign citizens, the validity period of the SIP card changes. The validity dates of this card will be the same as those appearing on the foreigner’s identification card (TIE).

We hope we have helped you and that you can apply for your SIP card to start using the Spanish healthcare system. Remember that you can contact us to receive advice on any questions you may have or procedures you need to carry out.
