If you are a foreign student and you are thinking of coming to study at university in Spain, you should know that you will need to have your foreign qualifications recognised in order to gain access to the Spanish education system. But what is the official recognition of degrees? In this post we explain what recognition of degrees consists of, how it can be done and who can apply for it.

What does the recognition of degrees consist of?

To begin with, you should know that there are two types of recognition: the recognition of non-university foreign degrees and studies and the recognition of foreign higher education qualifications.

In this case, as a student, you will be interested in the recognition of non-university foreign degrees and studies. This recognition will allow your non-university qualifications obtained abroad to be considered valid in Spain. In this way, once you have obtained this recognition, you will be able to study at Spanish universities.

In fact, there are the Spanish universities themselves that will require you to have these qualifications recognised.

You should also know that, in order to be able to get your degree recognised, you will first have to prepare a series of academic documents from your educational centre of origin. You can contact us so that we can take care of the process for you and you don’t have to worry about anything.

How to obtain recognition of degrees?

In Spain, there are two ways to have your degree recognised: through the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training or through the UNED. Whether you do it through one or the other will depend on what your host university asks you to do.

Spanish universities may ask you to present your recognised degrees through the Ministry’s recognition process or through the UNED’s accreditation process, indistinctly. Both processes serve the same purpose. In some cases, it is even possible that you may be asked to present both homologations. Whether you need one, the other or both will depend on the agreements that exist between your home and host educational centres.

Who can apply for a recognition of degrees?

You can apply for a recognition of degrees if you have studied in a foreign education system. These procedures are not necessary for students entering any of the courses of Primary Education or Secondary Education in the Spanish education system.

Moreover, you can only apply for recognition of degrees if you have fully completed your studies abroad. Under no circumstances will it be possible to validate individual subjects. You will also be required to have passed all the courses prior to the course for which you wish to apply for recognition.

On the other hand, the degree must correspond to the educational system of the country issuing it. Recognition of foreign degrees obtained by recognition in a third country will not be accepted.
