Gatherings with family and friends mark the Christmas holidays. This year, the situation is different due to the new Covid-19 variant Omicron. The Spanish autonomous communities have taken different measures to curb increases in infections. However, these attempts are not working in all regions of Spain. What are these measures taken by the communities and which of them are still in force today? What is the Covid situation after the Christmas holidays? In today’s post, we bring you up to date and tell you everything you need to know to protect yourself from the virus.

What measures have the autonomous communities taken against Covid-19?

The first measure reactivated this Christmas in Spain has been the compulsory use of face masks outdoors. However, in addition to the use of masks, each autonomous community has taken different measures depending on the health situation in their territories.

Some of the most important measures have been the closure of nightlife or the implementation of the Covid passport. To date, Catalonia is the autonomous community with the most restrictions. There are 127 Catalan municipalities with a curfew from 1am to 6am, and nightlife will remain closed until 21 January.

Meanwhile, in autonomous communities such as Madrid, Andalusia and Valencia, bars and restaurants and nightlife venues remain open according to their usual opening hours.

However, the Covid passport is one of the measures that has been most widely implemented throughout Spain. Only Madrid, Extremadura and the two Castilian regions have decided not to request the Covid passport in their establishments.

What is the current Covid situation in Spain?

The Christmas celebrations have taken their toll and, in the last 14 days, Spain has reported more than 1 million Covid-19 infections. The cumulative incidence of the virus as of today is 2258 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the highest number of infections is in Navarra and the Basque Country.

Even so, it is important to say that the new Omicron variant is less lethal and dangerous than those previously known.

For a 2022 in which we achieve the end of the pandemic. Remember to wear a mask, keep a safe distance, avoid crowds of people and disinfect your hands regularly.
