- You must have spent more than 183 days in Spanish territory.
- You must have the basis of your economic activities in Spain.
- Your spouse and minor children must be habitually resident in Spain.
However, if you do not meet any of these requirements and you want to open a bank account in Spain, then you need to continue reading this post.
How to open a bank account without being a resident in Spain?
Any person considered a non-resident in Spain can open a bank account in the country without any problem. To do so, you must first choose the bank branch that best suits your preferences and needs. We recommend the following ones:
BBVA
This bank has the best web application and a large presence throughout Spain. BBVA offers the option of opening a current account for non-residents, although we have to say that it does not allow you to do it online. If you want to open an account with this bank, you will have to go to a BBVA office in Spain.
Bankinter
Bankinter also offers the option of opening a bank account for non-residents. Opening this account will include a debit card, immediate liquidity and direct debit of bills, among others.
Banco Sabadell
This bank offers a specific account for non-residents called Key Account. This account allows you to acquire a credit card and a debit card. It also offers free transfers in euros, a document translation service, etcetera. As with BBVA, it is not possible to open this account online, so you will have to go to one of its branches in person.
Documents required to open a non-resident bank account
Normally, in order to open a current account as a non-resident, you will need to present your Non-Resident certificate and your passport. However, some banks may also ask for additional documents:
- Proof of monthly income or proof of employment.
- References from the bank in your home country.
- Document verifying your address.
There are some banks that limit the account for non-residents to 6 months. If not, your bank will usually ask you to renew your Non-Resident certificate every two years. If you do not renew it, the bank will automatically close your current account.
